Purpose: This document serves as guidance for qualification and receipt of application materials for the Resident/Graduate Student Pharmacology Research Award co-sponsored by the American College of Veterinary Clinical Pharmacology (ACVCP) and American Academy of Veterinary Pharmacology and Therapeutics (AAVPT). Specific items addressed include the objective of the award, candidate qualification, award amount, award frequency, judging the award, and award presentation.
Award Objective: The purpose of the Resident/Graduate Student Pharmacology Research Award is to recognize research excellence in clinical and/or basic pharmacology for residents and graduate students. A winning oral or poster research presentation will be identified annually during the ACVCP Annual Forum (held in conjunction with the ACVIM Annual Forum) or AAVPT Biennial Symposium.
Candidate Qualification: To be eligible for the Resident/Graduate Student Pharmacology Research Award, candidates must have completed their research under one of the following conditions: 1) while in training for qualification to sit the ACVCP exam; 2) as a resident/graduate student while being mentored by an ACVCP diplomate; or 3) as student member of AAVPT while in a graduate program under the guidance of an AAVPT Fellow. The abstract must be submitted BEFORE the candidate has become certified as a Diplomate of ACVCP, or in the case of a graduate student, before the graduate degree is awarded. An oral or poster presentation of the research must be presented at the ACVCP Annual Meeting (held in conjunction with the ACVIM Annual Forum) or at the AAVPT Biennial Symposium. It is the responsibility of the Chair of the ACVCP Scientific Program Committee and the Chair of the AAVPT Awards Committee to announce a call for award nominations and submission of abstracts at prior to the Forum or Symposium. Copies of abstracts accepted for consideration must be forwarded to the ACVCP Scientific Program Committee Chair or Chair of the AAVPT Awards Committee with a letter from the nominee's mentor at least 30 days prior to the presentation at the meeting. Electronic or hardcopy submissions will be accepted. Acceptance of abstracts not meeting the submission deadline will be subject to the discretion of the ACVCP Chair of the Scientific Program Committee and Chair of the AAVPT Awards Committee, who will make a judgment regarding the existence of compelling extenuating circumstances.
Award Amount: The award will be in the amount of $1,000 (US) and accompanied by a certificate signed by the officers of the ACVCP and AAVPT.
Award Frequency: The award will be granted annually if the judging committee determines that an abstract is of sufficient merit that is should be recognized with an award.
Judging the Award: An ad hoc committee appointed by the Chair of the ACVCP Scientific Program Committee and the Chair of the AAVPT Awards Committee will judge the award. The responsibility of chairing the ad hoc committee will alternate yearly between the ACVCP and AAVPT. The ad hoc committee will be comprised of at least 3 members; the Chair and two members selected by the Chair that are each members of the ACVCP and/or AAVPT. In the event that the Chair is not able to attend the meeting, the Chair will appoint a designee. Copies of qualified abstracts will be forward to the ad hoc committee members by the Chair prior to presentation. There will be no preference for oral or poster presentations and each will be considered equally for their merit. When the committee has viewed all presentations, they will be ranked first through last. The Chair will sum the rank for each candidate and the presentation with the lowest number (highest rank) will be considered the winner. In the event of a tie, the Chair will place the tie-breaking vote.
Award Presentation: The award will be presented at a predetermined place and time during the ACVCP Annual Meeting (held in conjunction with the ACVIM Forum) or AAVPT Biennial Symposium. The winner will be notified by the Chair prior to award presentation. If the winner is not able to attend the award presentation, the mentor may accept the award on his/her behalf, or the winner will be announced and the award will be forwarded by mail.
