There are the following categories of membership in AAVPT:
REGULAR MEMBER
Membership in the Academy is open to all individuals who have an interest in veterinary pharmacology and who intend to make meaningful contributions to the field. The following prerequisites must be met to the satisfaction of the Council before any candidate is eligible to become a member of the Academy.
The candidate must have a baccalaureate degree, a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (or equivalent) or a Doctor of Philosophy (or its equivalent) in pharmacology or a related discipline. Candidates for Regular Membership will be accepted after receipt by the Secretary/Treasurer of the candidate’s membership application and dues for the current year. Membership is immediate upon fulfillment of these criteria.
This category of membership is reserved for members who have made a meaningful contribution toward the advancement of the discipline of veterinary pharmacology. To be eligible for membership as a Fellow, an individual must meet the following 3 requirements:
- Be a member of the Academy
- Possess either:
- A baccalaureate degree or equivalent and at least five (5) years of experience in education or research in veterinary pharmacology OR
- The Doctor of Veterinary Medicine or PharmD or equivalent and at least five (5) years of experience in education or research in veterinary pharmacology OR
- A Master of Science (in pharmacology or related discipline) or equivalent and at least three (3) years of experience in education or research in veterinary pharmacology OR
- The Doctor of Philosophy degree or equivalent in an allied discipline and at least two (2) years of experience in education or research in veterinary pharmacology OR
- The Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (or equivalent) and board certification as a diplomat of the American College of Veterinary Clinical Pharmacology (or foreign equivalent) and at least two (2) years of experience in education or research in veterinary pharmacology
- Have made a meaningful contribution toward advancement of the discipline.
DISTINQUISHED FELLOW
This category of membership is reserved for Fellows who have made an outstanding contribution to the field of veterinary pharmacology. The titles Fellow and Distinguished Fellow may be held simultaneously.
EMERITUS MEMBER or EMERITUS FELLOW
This category of membership is for Members or Fellows of the Academy who have retired. Their membership status will be converted to Emeritus upon submission of a written request to the Secretary-Treasurer after their retirement. The titles Emeritus Fellow and Distinguished Fellow may be held simultaneously.
This category of membership is for graduate students, interns, or residents whose sponsor is a Member or Fellow of the Academy. The candidate must have a baccalaureate degree or Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (or its equivalent) and be actively enrolled in an intern, residency, Master’s or Doctor of Philosophy degree program in pharmacology or related fields in which the candidate’s work pertains primarily to pharmacology. Student membership is restricted to a maximum duration of six (6) years.
